#DOCU: Life Of Agony – The Sound Of Scars
Op 12 juli treedt Life Of Agony op in poppodium Bolwerk. Terwijl we ons alvast voorbereiden op deze avond door naar al hun albums te luisteren, willen we je ook wijzen op iets bijzonders: de documentaire The Sound Of Scars.
De inmiddels al drie decennia actieve metalband Life Of Agony is het onderwerp van deze documentaire uit 2022, geregisseerd door Leigh Brooks. Brooks heeft een zeer persoonlijke film gemaakt over de turbulente reis van deze Amerikaanse band sinds hun oprichting in 1989. Met behulp van archiefbeelden, interviews en zeldzame foto’s toont Brooks hoe de bandleden van Life Of Agony huiselijk geweld, drugs en depressies hebben overwonnen, en zo de soundtrack voor een generatie metalfans hebben gecreëerd. Guitarist Joey Zampella zegt in een persbericht: “We’ve completely torn ourselves open for this film. Viewers and our fanbase will understand how we fought our way through and what this journey means to us.” Bassist Alan Robert voegt daaraan toe: “Our coming together was a way to save ourselves, but with the music and the honesty of the lyrics, we’ve saved so many others along the way.”
De documentaire zoomt ook in op de gendertransitie van zangeres Mina Caputo. In Lust For Life 095 zegt ze: “I don’t have to be on the barricades all the time, I’m not fighting for the title of ‘best advocate’. I do what I can, where I can. My existence is a form of activism. I put my body, my life on the line. Simply by existing, by traveling to countries where I know I am not accepted. But the beautiful thing is that every day I see that there is a lot of love for trans people.”
